In Praise of Captain Denkert

“Capt Dave Denkert is unquestionably one of South Florida and the Florida Keys’ premiere flats fishing guides. Dave’s tournament anglers somehow seem to be among the top finishers every time out of the box. His casual anglers always report good fishing effort and a pleasant day on the water with Dave. He has wealth of knowledge and great range from Key West to Biscayne and Florida Bay as well as up the Cape and inside Whitewater Bay. Dave can mix the fishing up to suit the anglers ability whether using fly or light tackle and shares a wealth of knowledge about the environment, birds, gators and entire ecosystem. My Florida Keys Outfitters connect clients with Dave all the time and get rave reviews. I’d be happy to be on his bow anytime!”

“Capt. Dave Denkert is the epitome, of the type of guide and individual that I prefer to fish with and just spend time with. It was probably 10 years ago that I fished the first “Back Bone Tournament”. Dave was my guide and because it was a two angler team event, Manny Fernandez, Miami Dolphins, Football Hall of Famer was my partner. Continue…

We certainly kicked butt and took names, catching more bonefish, tarpon snook, redfish and trout than any other six anglers combined in a large tournament with 80+ anglers. We would not have even had to fish the second day in order to win the tournament… But we did, and once again we kicked butt! To top it all off, making it even more difficult for Dave to produce these fish for us, we had a second boat following because we were shooting a pilot film for a television series. Since this time, Dave has been a friend and my guide while doing a few other successful TV shows.

Over the years before the above tournament and since, I have had many opportunities to see Dave in action; both while being on his boat and competing against him from another boat during numerous tournaments. Yes, he rapidly became one of the most sought after backcountry guides in the Florida Keys, because he is the type of individual everyone wants to spend numerous days with, in his boat.

Not only is he an excellent backcountry guide and gentlemen, he has been fishing the Florida Keys for more than 30 years and has become a true student of its environment. I highly recommend him.”

“I met Captain Dave Denkert [in those days, Dave], in South Florida around the mid eighties, and already he was well known as a top light tackle angler. Basically, if you went out with Dave, you caught fish. Continue…

One day, Dave invited me to fish Flamingo, to try our luck on some redfish and seatrout he’d found around the Frank Key area. Well, as it turned out, I knew Frank Key real well, and had some hot spots to show Dave. Little did I know. By lunch time, I found that Dave not only knew all of my hot spots, but he had hot spots “within” my hot spots! I learned more about Frank Key that day than I had in the past 10 year. We still laugh about it today.

Since that fishing trip, about a quarter century ago, I’ve watch Dave gradually improve his skills to the point where he is now a world class fishing guide who has won many of the most prestigious tournament held in South Florida, often competing with some of the best light tackle and fly fishermen in the world.
Going out with Dave is not only a way to catch fish but a great fishing and learning experience. I’m always ready to fish with Dave, and I’m proud to be his friend.”

“What an honor. In any profession there is always a select few that are at the top of their craft and Capt. Dave Denkert is right there. Beginner or experienced anglers will marvel at his ability to find fish in virtually every weather condition. When an opportunity to fish a tournament is presented, his phone number is the first one I call.”

“I have enjoyed many outstanding fishing charters with Captain Dave Denkert during the past 15 years. He has a sixth sense for finding fish and he is skilled at setting up his anglers to take their best shots at them. Dave is a great person and an outstanding Captain. When friends and colleagues ask me to refer a captain in the Florida Keys, Dave is one of the first guides I suggest. Several of the anglers I have recommended to Dave have become regular clients of his. Continue…

My daughter Heather, age 15, has joined me on several times on Dave’s skiff. Together we have had some of our most memorable charters. Dave’s reputation as a captain and as a conservationist have earned him the admiration and respect of all who know him in the fishing community. As a team, Dave, His wife Linda and their daughter Brooke have amassed numerous tournament wins and have distinguished themselves not only as winners, but also as leaders in the fishing community. If you want to have a quality fishing experience in the Florida Keys, just give Captain Dave Denkert a call and he will take care of the rest!”

“I have fished with captain Dave Denkert for perhaps twenty years. Being a native Miamian, Captain Dave has been fishing the waters of the Keys, Miami, and Everglades National Park ever since he was able to row or paddle a boat. He is extremely knowledgeable regarding all aspects of fishing but in addition to being a great guide, he is very pleasant and I always look forward to sharing a seat in the boat with him. Catching fish is never a problem!”
